It all starts with the grid

The shape of your paper, the number of divisions, the orientation of your grid relative to the edges of the paper, and what's at the center of your grid determines what your project will look like in the end.

The precision of your gridding determines the precision of the rest of your folds.

For display pieces, I completely customize the orientation and number of divisions of my grid using the crease pattern - and the math involved doesn't go beyond counting, adding, factoring, and fractions.

Symmetry is key

How do you identify repeats? Find identically symmetric points.

What should you put in the center? The position of highest symmetry.

What shape should the tessellation be folded on? The one that matches the highest rotational symmetry point or the structure of the tiling.

One of the first things that I cover in this course is how to identify rotational symmetry points and mirror symmetry lines, since they are the key to the planning process.

Practice makes perfect

It took me years to accumulate these techniques and to practice seeing tessellations from a planning perspective.

With sample crease patterns and guided practice, my goal is to help you understand the underlying principles and be able to independently apply them to whatever tessellation you want to fold.

Tools and Support

Since my planning techniques require crease patterns, I've added template files to the course to make it as easy as possible to draw your own origami tessellation crease patterns in Inkscape or the vector graphics software of your choice.

The live annual updates are interactive and I'm happy to answer questions in between updates through email or my Discord server, so you can always get support when you need it.
